Ceramic vs carbon window tint in Southern California heat
October 15, 2026 · Chris Johnson
In Southern California heat, ceramic tint is worth the upgrade. It rejects up to 98% of infrared heat and 99% of UV, and can keep the cabin 20 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit cooler than untinted glass. Carbon tint costs less and still gives solid UV and heat performance if budget comes first.
What it costs
- Carbon tint, side and rear windows: $200 to $400
- Ceramic tint, the whole car: $400 to $800 or more
- Windshield ceramic film: an extra $150 to $300
A full car takes 2 to 4 hours; plan to leave it with us for half a day.
The differences that matter
- Heat. Ceramic uses nano-ceramic particles that reject far more infrared heat, the heat you feel on your arm through the glass.
- Signals. Ceramic doesn't interfere with phone, GPS or radio signals.
- Lifespan. Quality ceramic and carbon film both last 10 to 15 years or more, with manufacturer warranties from XPEL, 3M, Llumar and SunTek.
What California law allows
- Rear side windows and the rear windshield: any darkness.
- Front side windows: must let more than 70% of light through.
- Windshield: a non-reflective strip along the top, down to the AS-1 line.
